The world's greatest gold rush began in 1896 when a prospector discovered gold near the Klondike River. The news spread quickly. By 1897, thousands of adventurers were on their way to Canada's far north. These people were called Klondikers. For many, the trip included a long hike over the rugged Coast Mountains.
