The Native Peoples of Canada honoured wolves and considered them fellow hunters. The Inuit of northern Canada followed the tracks and howls of wolves to hunt caribou for food. In British Columbia, the "wolf dance" was a Native method of teaching young people to become better adults. Youths were encouraged to think like wolves to help them become unselfish family members and effective hunters. The Cheyenne Natives even named the brightest star in the sky the "Wolf Star." Religious temples were even built to observe this special star.
