One synthetic pesticide, called DDT, was very effective in controlling pests around the world. Farmers in North America used DDT on their fruit, corn, and grain crops to prevent pest damage. Countries in Asia and Africa used it kill mosquitos that spread malaria to humans. DDT was very efficient because most insect pests died soon after contact with the poison.
